In the Kitchen

Not starting a fire
because it’s April
& the dandelions are up yet
the room as cold as February–
no sound but stiff fingers
scratching across a page,
writing two poems–
one sour & permanent,
the other a mad lament
for the snow
on the other side of the mountain.

Volume 7, no. 1, 1979

Thomas Pirkle is a poet and translator who currently lives in a small village in the mountains of southern Spain. He has published in numerous literary journals in both the US and Ireland, where he formerly resided. In 2020 he published Eyes of Water: Selected Poems of José Angel Valente.
